Abstract

Reports on surface layers (S layers) of gram-negative and gram-positive eubac- teria and archaebacteria have increased in recent years [2, 3, 16, 17, 22, 23]. These structures are regarded as important virulence factors mediating serum resistance [3] and protection against proteolytic attack and phagocytosis [4, 16, 18]. Furthermore, bacterial adhesion, autoaggregation, and recognition of the host cells are promoted by S layers [23]. This report describes the preparation and structural analysis of surface-associated proteins of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
