Abstract
In the early 1980s, approximately 250,000 women were enrolled in mammographic screening programmes for early detection of breast cancer, either in controlled studies (Two Counties, Sweden) or in demonstration projects (Utrecht/Nijmegen, the Netherlands; Florence, Italy; UK trial, UK).
