Abstract
A procedure for gravimetric data validation in sea zones has been established and applied to a set of 26949 free-air gravity anomalies in the Mediterranean sea, in the framework of the Geomed project which aims at evaluating a high precision geoid in this area.
The area has been divided in non-overlapping 2°×2° zones with a regular distribution of data (except in some cases). The data have been validated by comparison with the gravity anomalies predicted by means of the least-squares collocation method, using a spherical harmonic expansion (OSU81) complete to degree 180. Gross errors have been detected in about 1%.
