Abstract
In 1990, the WEGENER (Working-group of European Geo-scientists for the Establishment of Networks for Earth-science Research), which had been set up in Frankfurt am Main in 1981, underwent a restructuring. 28 Principal Investigators representing institutions in 24 different countries agreed to cooperate in the definition of a scientific programme to be realised jointly in the next decade. Since 1990 the membership has continued to expand, so that at present over 80 institutions spread over 34 countries are involved. The paper reports on the history of WEGENER, the main activities over the years since its inception, presents the structure of the new organisation and the scientific objectives it has defined.
