Summary

In preliminary investigations it could be shown that the various types of vagotomy may be carried out by laparoscopic means, and evidence for their acid reducing capacity was provided. But before laparoscopic vagotomy can be more widely adopted, proof of its efficiency in the sense of a controlled, comparative trial is indispensable. It is the precondition enabling one to decide whether laparoscopic vagotomy presents a serious therapeutic alternative to the conventional PGV saving a considerable number of patients the lifelong medication.
