Abstract

Risk assessment and risk management are terms used to define broadly the activities of identifying and quantifying risk due to environmental agents and processes, and the actions taken to prevent, minimize or ameliorate these risks. As a simplification, risk assessment is usually considered to encompass the science underlying the decision process, and risk management to signify the policy process rendering a decision, but there are policy aspects underlying risk assessment and science that are, or ought to be, part of risk management.
