Abstract
The peptidoglycan sacculus of a bacterial cell which is located at the outside of the cytoplasmic membrane is considered to be the load-bearing structure of Gram-positive and Gram-negative eubacteria. Numerous reports over the last few years based on electron microscopic analysis of freeze-substituted thin-sectioned cells and pulsed addition of radiolabeled diaminopimelic acid to growing cells have improved our knowledge concerning fine structural aspects and cell wall assembly processes.
