Abstract

Previous reviews of this series on prokaryotic DNA replication dealt only with the mechanism of vegetative replication which is a prerequisite for the genetic continuity of a cell and its extrachromosomal elements when division occurs. However, many bacterial plasmids carry genetic information allowing for another type of DNA replication which is employed during conjugal transfer of DNA molecules between bacterial cells. This plasmid property, conjugal plasmid transfer, which is governed by a mechanism distinctly different from general DNA replication, will be discussed in the present review, since it is of general importance for the understanding of plasmid biology.
