Experience with the Bioabsorbable Valtrac Ring in Small and Large Bowel Anastomoses
Following reports about clinical application of bioabsorbable Valtrac rings to perform sutureless intestinal anastomoses, and based on good experience with circular staplers in clinical routine, the introduction of Valtrac rings in our clinic was a logical consequence. The essential advantages mechanical anastomotic techniques consist in their standardization and, consequently, more safety by avoiding subjective failures. After extensive oncosurgical preparations of the gastrointestinal tract, the use of mechanical techniques for reconstructive procedures obviously relieves the surgeon and shortens the duration of surgery. Due to its fragmentability and applicability in every gastroenteric section without need of additional enterotomy, the Valtrac ring offers advantages over the circular stapler. The circular stapler is preferable only for serosa-free sections of the digestive tract (esophagus, deep rectum).
