Abstract

UNIX, as first conceived by AT&T Bell Laboratories, was not a realtime operating system. Its design objectives were to optimize timesharing — simply put: “All processes are created equal.” Realtime applications demand an operating environment that can deliver a different view: “Realtime processes must be created more equal than others.” This talk will cover:

  • Why isn’t UNIX Realtime?

  • A History of Realtime UNIX approaches

  • Current Trends in UNIX Realtime

  • POSIX.4 Realtime Extensions — UNIX Realtime Programming

  • Future — The Ideal Realtime Computing Environment
