Effects of Lectins on Adenylylation and Phosphorylation of Plasma Membrane Proteins

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Springer Laboratory ((SLM))

Abstract

One of the most interesting approaches in the study of lectins is the recognition of defined biochemical pathways and specific cellular responses modulated by these glycoconjugate-binding proteins. In this context, the transduction of signals from lectin receptors, located in the plasma membrane, to specific intracellular target systems is an integral part of these mechanisms and deserves special attention. Biosignaling is, certainly, crucial to understand the mode of action of lectins, a particularly important subject of study in normal and tumor cells when lectins from plant and animal origins are used (Olden and Parent 1987; Gabius 1991).
