Abstract

The neuropathologieal aspects of perinatal asphyxia depend mainly on brain maturation. Germinal matrix intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) are the most common neuropathologieal findings reported in premature infants, while various patterns of cerebral lesions occur in the mature neonate. Thus, lesions affecting gray matter of cortex, basal ganglia, and brain stem increase in importance with maturity.
