A wave propagation theorist, on encountering the ion cyclotron whistler, cannot fail to be fascinated. Precise observational evidence and a satisfying theoretical treatment involving the understanding of several esoteric features of plasma wave propagation theory justify the devotion of a separate chapter to this phenomenon. Although the ion cyclotron whistler is not a major denizen of the plasma wave jungle it is one of the most interesting.
