Abstract
Surgical treatment of malignant hepatic lesions represents the only chance of long-term tumor-free survival. This treatment consists mainly in resection of anatomically and nonanatomically defined portions of the liver. Major hepatic tumors can be resected quite safely nowadays. This has led to less restrictive indications for both malignant and benign disease of the liver. The improvement in results among surgically treated patients with mass lesions of the liver is based on the anatomical definition (Couinaud 1957; Bismuth et al. 1982), standardized techniques (Bismuth et al. 1982; Iwatsuki et al. 1989), and technical progress (CUSA, intraoperative ultrasound). Another surgical treatment — liver transplantation — became a competitive option for these lesions.
