Abstract

An approach to the left ventricle contour detection in ultrasonic imaging is presented. The method exploits digital image processing and pattern recognition methods in a two-step combination. The first one uses a least-cost path search based on the dynamic programming in order to find the raw ventricle contour derived from the image domain. The second step utilises an apriori knowledge of contour possible shapes to detect and correct significant errors caused by signal dropouts, noise and the errors of the previous processing. A great attention is payed not to force the apriori knowledge into the detected contour. The whole method is ready for processing of image sequences and should serve for volumetric measurements on the left ventricle during heart action.
