Abstract

Acid and alkali corrosives affect the body tissues in different ways (Donner et al. 1981). It is generally agreed that ingestion of corrosive acids primarily damages the stomach, and particularly its distal half, with little involvement of the oesophagus. Alkali ingestion on the other hand, primarily damages the pharynx and oesophagus, and only rarely involves the stomach (Steigmann and Dolehid 1956; Marks et al. 1963; Poteshman 1967; Ritter et al. 1968; Allen et al. 1970; Franken 1973; Nicosia et al. 1974; Donner et al. 1981; Gimmon and Durst 1981; Jena and Lazarus 1985).
