Summary
The metastatic process of malignant cells is a very complex phenomenon and it is most likely that the success of metastasis formation depends on numerous interactions between the tumor cell and cells or components of the target organ.
Most important is the ability of the tumor cell to express or to modulate receptors on the cell surface which play an important role in cell-substrate and cell-cell interactions.
This might be responsible for the fact that certain malignant tumors show a preference for specific organs during the metastatic process. Using monoclonal antibodies it is possible to identify and characterize tumor-associated adhesion molecules.
Functional monoclonal antibodies can interfere with cell-substrate and cell-cell interactions and can prevent tumor growth and metastases.
