Preferential Fertilization: Data and Strategy for Molecular Analysis

Abstract

Double fertilization was first described by Nawashin (1898) and Guignard (1899) and involves the fusion of the two male gametes with the two female gametes within the embryo sac: one fusion initiates embryo formation and a second fusion triggers formation of the secondary endosperm (reviewed in Knox et al, 1986).
