Interactive Visualization of Environmental Measurement Networks

Abstract

The graphical representation of environmental information requires the display of objects like hazardous sites and measurement stations on a two-dimensional map. The map may be given as pixel information or vectorial information. The form of the optical representation itselfis difficult, if the number of objects is large and the types of objects have a wide variety.

In general, these objects represent not only Single values or states but a whole set of domain informations, which reside in a domain database.

In order to built user friendly Software systems, this domain information should be accessed by direct manipulation techniques. Therefore, selecting an object, represented as an icon, brings up a whole new diaiogue sequence.

Programming such highly interactive graphical user Interfaces using conventional programming techniques is an expensive task. As many of the objects used can be grouped into common frameworks, object-orientation is the most useful concept for implementation.
