Abstract

We describe here the way in which the years of training are structured between qualifying as a physician and obtaining a consultant general surgical post in the United Kingdom. This is a complicated process that takes place over about 15 years in many different hospitals and not merely one University Hospital. To a great extent it is unplanned, haphazard and unstructured, but it is based on the hospital system that exists in the National Health Service. This is not presented as an ideal system, because there is probably no one optimum training scheme, and any system represents compromises which have evolved from the methods of providing hospital surgical care. It is therefore essential to understand the British system of surgical care before examining the training schemes.
