Abstract

With increasing hardware system complexity on the one hand and a large variety of interacting design tools for more levels of abstraction on the other hand, the circuit design process becomes more and more complex. For specification, design capture, verification, tool interaction, and design process control, a huge amount of design and control data has to be entered or has to be accessible through the user interface. We identify design data filtering, visualization functions and automatic display layout as keys to a systematic improvement of the user interface. An experimental system is used to investigate several algorithms for display layout. Our results show that automatic layout in an interactive environment is possible when different algorithms are mixed in several layout phases.
