Abstract
The development of STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) is devoted to specify and to standardize a product data model which will not only effect data exchange but all the functions of product data processing. In this constribution the methodology and the design principles for developing the product data model are being presented. Furthermore, the structure of the future STEP standard and its content are explained.
