Abstract

Forming the easternmost part of the Bohemian Massif, the Moravo-Silesian Zone (MSZ) can be followed from Krems in Austria in a NNE direction to Moravia (Czech Republic) and farther N probably up to the Odra Fault in Poland. It includes the autochthonous Cadomian basement (Brunovistulicum; Dudek 1980) with its Devonian to Carboniferous sedimentary cover, and the classic allochthonous Variscan units — the Moravicum and Silesicum (Suess 1912). All these units (except for the puzzling Drosendorf Window; see below) are situated E of the Moldanubian and Ramzová (or Nýznerov) thrusts (Suess 1912) — Fig. 1, or the Moravo-Silesian Fault Zone (Mísař 1967), a major Variscan tectonic interface separating the MSZ from the overriding Moldanubian and Lusatian nappes.
