Abstract

Kossmat (1927) proposed a subdivision of Variscan Europe, in which he extended the Saxothuringicum east through Lusatia to the West Sudetes (Figs. 1, 2). He termed this region the Saxothuringian and Sudetian Zones. Suess (1926) referred to the region comprised of the Lusatia and the West Sudetes as Lugicum (after the province of Lausitz). Stille (1951) dismissed the possibility of linking Lugicum with Saxothuringicum and proposed the Elbe zone as a boundary between the two (Figs. 1,2).
