Abstract

The biological function of MHC molecules was a mystery to immunologists for a long time, since the rejection of allografts determined by MHC antigens has no survival value. It is evident that this complex system and its huge polymorphism have not evolved for this trivial purpose, although it was the basis of the initial discovery of these molecules by Gorer et al. (1948) in the mouse.
