Abstract
As bone marrow transplantation has evolved into the treatment of choice for many hematologic malignancies (Storb et al. 1984; Goldman et al. 1986; Thomas 1983), the lack of HLA-identical sibling donors for most patients has become a major issue. Given the current average family size in the USA of approximately 2.7 children, only 35% of patients can anticipate having an HLA-identical sibling (Nesbit et al. 1987; Appelbaum et al. 1986). For this reason, many centers have begun exploring the use of HLA-matched or HLA-similar unrelated volunteer donors.
