Abstract

We have previously reported that atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia of the gastric mucosa, which are both regarded as precancerous conditions of gastric cancer, have similar etiologies [1]. Atrophic change of gastric mucosa was found in a few Japanese patients with duodenal ulcer [2], and the localization of peptic ulcers in the stomach correlated with the extent of coexisting atrophic gastritis [3]. With ulcers of the antrum, closed type 1 gastric mucosal atrophy was seen most frequently, and the antral mucosa became broader with development of peptic ulcers at more proximal sites of the stomach [2]. In the countries where gastric ulcer patients are more frequent than duodenal ulcer patients, the mortality rate from gastric cancer apppears to be high. We therefore consider that the gastric ulcer to duodenal ulcer ratio (GU/DU) is an indicator of possible gastric cancer development.
