Usefulness of Two Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay Systems for the Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori-Associated Gastritis

Abstract

Several histological and microbiological detection methods are available for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis. However, these require endoscopy with biopsies from the gastric antrum. Therefore they are not feasible for epidemiological studies. To facilitate the diagnosis, non-invasive techniques such as breath tests and serological detection of H. pylori antibodies have been developed [1–4]. Home-made serological tests with different antigen preparations are widely employed. Several commercial enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assays (ELISA) have recently become available. A high diagnostic yield, and high sensitivity and specificity values are claimed for these tests. In the present study one such test, the Bio-Rad GAP test, was compared with a homemade ELISA used in our laboratory.

This paper is published in extended form entitled “Usefulness of a new serological test (Bio-Rad) to diagnose Helicobacter pylori associated gastritis” in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology (1991) 29: 283–286.
