Zusammenfassung
Bei den meisten Todesfällen im Rettungsdienst handelt es sich um Patienten mit zunächst unklarer Todesursache. Dies begründet sich aus der Tatsache, daß dem Notarzt nähere Umstände (Alter, Vorgeschichte, soziales Umfeld und zeitliches Eintreten des Kreislaufstillstandes) in der Regel nicht bekannt sind. Trotzdem muß in dieser Situation schnell entschieden werden, ob es sinnvoll ist die Reanimation zu beginnen oder ggf. fortzuführen, um einen irreversiblen hypoxischen Hirnschaden zu vermeiden oder auf eine Therapie zu verzichten, weil die Prognose quo ad vitam infaust ist.
