Biosynthesis of Enkephalins and Proenkephalin-Derived Peptides

Opioids

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 104 / 1))

Abstract

The enkephalins [Met5]- and [Leu5]enkephalin were isolated in 1975 by Hughes et al. Since then, numerous other opioid peptides have been characterized although none of these are found in levels comparable to [Met5]enkephalin in brain tissue (see Table 1). Brain levels of prodynorphin and proopiomelanocortin-derived peptides, for example, are at least one order of magnitude lower than those of [Met5]enkephalin. When compared to other nonopioid peptides, the levels of [Met5]enkephalin are of the same order as two other widely distributed peptides, CCK8 and somatostatin (see review in Crawley 1985).
