Inflammatory Mass in the Pancreatic Head Associated with Chronic Pancreatitis

Standards in Pancreatic Surgery

Abstract

It is widely accepted that chronic alcoholic pancreatitis generally involves the whole pancreas [2, 12]. There is, however, a subgroup of patients (approximately 5%–10%) suffering from focal lesions of chronic pancreatitis. Mainly, in the surgical literature, preponderant lesions of the head and/or the left side of the pancreatic gland have been described in patients undergoing surgery for pain and other complications [1, 9]. Surprising few data, however, exist concerning the prevalence of preponderant pathological lesions involving the head, body or tail of the pancreas which then lead to specific complications of the disease. Due to the improved techniques for imaging, especially computed tomography (CT) scan, which is used on a routine basis in patients with chronic pancreatitis, we are able to observe and evaluate patients with these focal lesions. There are several reasons for the enhanced interest especially in the inflammatory mass in the head of the pancreas.
