Epidemiology of Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract

The epidemiology of chronic pancreatitis (CP) can be seen in terms of various aspects. A prerequisite is a clear definition of the disease, which enables us to compare reports in the literature on epidemiology of CP in various parts of the world [25]. In the following we discuss aspects of the various etiologic factors of CP, such as alcohol, diet, and genetics. Knowledge about etiology may help to explain data on incidence and prevalence of CP with regards to sex, age, and demography. Special emphasis is placed on the discussion of tropical pancreatitis. Prognosis of CP is another epidemiological aspect. Thus, we must discuss special aspects of the clinical course of the disease and the association with other diseases.
