Pancreatic Abscess in Biliary Acute Pancreatitis

Standards in Pancreatic Surgery

Abstract

The incidence of pancreatic abscess (PA) in acute pancreatitis (AP) is between 2% and 9% [2, 6, 11, 13, 21, 23]. PA is a severe complication with a mortality rate of 30%–50%, which has remained constant over recent decades [11, 14, 21]. Before the advent of imaging techniques, diagnosis was difficult and usually not achieved until late in the evolution. Now, however, using computed tomography (CT), diagnosis is made earlier, when there is a pancreatic fluid collection.
