Abstract
Among patients with severe acute pancreatitis, who represent approximately 20%–25% of all patients diagnosed with this disease, a proportion will come to surgery early in the first admission. This specifically excludes patients in whom the rarity of a diagnostic laparotomy is required. Within the severe group a minority will meet the indications for surgical intervention, provided the best possible conservative management is given. This minority group comprises between 4% and 17.5% of all patients [1, 2].
