Abstract

Next to medical progress structural considerations will help to optimize intensive care cost-benefit ratio as well as the quality of patient care today and in future. Investments in today’s clinical practice and in basic as well as clinical research will also improve the quality of intensive care medicine. All these factors are strongly interacting and dependent on each other: the intensive care unit (ICU) of tomorrow is a very sensitive and complex network.
