Abstract
Various methods have been developed to image the rectum and the pelvic floor, at rest and during defaecation. Some methods are very complex and useful only for research. To simulate a rectum full of faeces, instead of introducing a contrast medium directly into the rectum, Preston [1] and, subsequently, Lahr [2], have used a specially designed balloon filled with barium. This method is supposed to be more comfortable and less malodorous for the patient and the x-ray staff.
