Various methods have been developed to image the rectum and the pelvic floor, at rest and during defaecation. Some methods are very complex and useful only for research. To simulate a rectum full of faeces, instead of introducing a contrast medium directly into the rectum, Preston and, subsequently, Lahr , have used a specially designed balloon filled with barium. This method is supposed to be more comfortable and less malodorous for the patient and the x-ray staff.
