Abstract

When confronted with the issue of the interchange and the communication of images, the problem of storage and transmission formats emerges. One such dilemma is the initial choice which has to be made between two broad types of images: raster and vector images. This article presents several applications of either raster or vector images. The display, the printing and the recording of images is done independendy of the format. This independence is possible thanks to:

the use of conversion tools and associated utilities,

the choice of an intermediate format for raster image conversions,

the definition of a reference format for raster images,

the use of the CGM standard for vector images.
