Geologic Structure, Petroleum Exploration Development and Hydrocarbon Potential of Bulgaria

  • Chapter
Hydrocarbons of Eastern Central Europe

Abstract

Bulgaria covers 111,000 km2 and is located on the Balkan Peninsula, in southeastern Europe. The search for petroleum and natural gas in Bulgaria started about 70 years ago. Locations for the first wells drilled for hydrocarbons were close to known oil and gas seeps in northeastern Bulgaria and around the Provadija dome. The first commercial discoveries were made after the World War II: oil in 1951 in the Varna Basin, at Tjulenovo, and gas in 1949 at Bliznak.
