Abstract

This article explores the application of the Competition Model [23] as an account of foreign language acquisition. The model is discussed in terms of the constructs of cue validity, cue cost, and form-function mappings. The model predicts certain types of transfer in phonological, syntactic, and lexical learning. In the attempt to maximize transfer of L1 structures the learner uses a variety of complex learning strategies. Tutoring systems for foreign language instruction need to recognize the use of these transfer strategies and correct the errors which they produce.
