Abstract

A theory of the high-T c superconductors is developed based on the ideas of the resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the spin- charge separation in it. The gauge field is naturally introduced to ensure the local gauge invariance of the theory which is equivalent to the local conservation of “charge”. The fluctuating gauge field gives rise to the inelastic scattering of the bosons and fermions. This effect together with the screening effect by the gauge field explains various anomalous normal state properties of the high-T c superconductors, e.g., T-linear resistivity and T-dependent Hall constant, consistent with the large fermi surface observed in the angle-resolved photo-emission experiments.
