Abstract

The two disorders included in the category of giant cell arteritis are temporal or cranial arteritis and Takayasu’s arteritis, also called pulseless disease or aortic arch arteritis. Both diseases are characterized histopathologically by panarteritides of large or medium-sized arteries, with inflammatory mononuclear cell infiltrates of the media, giant cell formation within vessel walls, and destruction of the internal elastic lamina. Eventually, proliferation of intima leads to vessel occlusion.
