Zusammenfassung
Ätiologie und Pathogenese der meisten psychogeriatrischen Erkrankungen sind heute noch weitgehend unklar. Vielfach lassen sich jedoch post mortem verschiedene neuropathologische und biochemische Veränderungen nachweisen. Damit scheint deren biologische Mitverursachung zumindest denkbar. Die beobachteten Veränderungen stellen jedoch einen Endzustand dar, der nur in einem Teil der Fälle Rückschlüsse auf die Ätiologie erlaubt. Oftmals handelt es sich um Sekundärphänomene von noch unbekannten Krankheitsprozessen. Das entscheidende Hindernis für die neuropathologische und biochemische Forschung bei psychiatrischen Erkrankungen besteht darin, daß das Gehirn am Lebenden nicht zugänglich ist. Tiermodelle für die meisten derartigen Erkrankungen gibt es nicht, oder sie sind — wegen beim Tier nicht vorhandener, spezifisch menschlicher Eigenschaften — nur unzureichend auf den Menschen übertragbar.
