Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is often accompanied by anaemia, the severity of which correlates with the activity of the disease. This particular kind of anaemia, anaemia of chronic disease (ACD) is characterised by decreased serum iron and decreased transferrin saturation despite the presence of normal or increased bone marrow iron stores (Cartwright and Lee 1971).The reticulocyte count is low for the degree of anaemia.
