Abstract
Hypoperfusion of the kidney caused by significant unilatral stenosis of the renal artery is a well — known cause of renovascular hypertension (RVH). As already shown by Reissmann (1950) and Erslev (1953) hypoxia is triggering erythropoietin (EPO) release by the kidneys. More recently it has been proven that renal hypoxia is triggering oxygen sensors (probably located in the proximal tubules; Kurtz et al. 1988), which in turn are stimulating EPO synthesis and release by peritubular cells (Lacombe et al. 1988).
