Abstract
The introduction of fiber optics and new switching technologies allows the development of new services and applications based on the integration of different information types (voice, data, video, images). The paper outlines the architecture and the major solutions adopted for the development of a broadband, multifunctional computer network in F.R. Germany under the acronym BERKOM Berliner Kommunikationssystem. BERKOM is a pilot project of the Deutsches Bundespost and aims at an integrated broadband communication system. A reference model was developed for the global system focussing on new multifunctional end-system architectures.
