Progress in Botany

Part of the book series: Progress in Botany/Fortschritte der Botanik ((BOTANY,volume 53))

Abstract

Stimulus-modulated locomotion in plants and microorganisms meets at least three basic functions; the search for regions in the biotope that allow optimal growth, search for mating partners, and escape from detrimental conditions in the environment. Three types of cellular locomotion are known; swimming by means of flagella, gliding, and amoeboid creeping. There is quite a variety of stimulus-induced and receptor-mediated effects on the motor organelles, ultimately resulting in taxis, phobic responses and kinesis.
