Abstract

Recombinant DNA technology and recent advances in tissue culture have opened new avenues to plant breeders in reconstruction of agronomically important characters. The expanded repertoire of techniques available for successful foreign gene transfer resulted in increasing production of transformed plants (e. g., reviews by Gasser and Fraley 1989; Uchimiya et al. 1989; Hooykaas 1989; Potrykus 1990). A part of these transgenic plants has been altered in important agronomically traits and could find favor in plant breeding as basic material or improved varieties.
