The Major Stages of Earth History

  • Pierre Cotillon

We will define the Precambrian as the period of time from the formation of the Earth to the lower boundary of the Cambrian, although a narrower definition starts the Precambrian from the first dated rocks (3800 m.y.). This traditional term is not the best because it does not fit with the names of later eras, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic. Thus, some people prefer the term Archeozoic.
