Escherichia coli Strains in Which the Chromosome Is Replicated from Origins Other than oriC

  • Conference paper
Book cover DNA Replication: The Regulatory Mechanisms

Abstract

The Escherichia coli chromosome is bidirectionally replicated from a unique origin, oriC. Various strains exist in which chromosome replication is controlled by other replicons, located at varying distance from oriC. The copy number determined by the alternative replicon may be different from that of the wild type, replication can be bidirectional or show varying degrees of unidirectionality, and initiation is usually randomly timed during the cell cycle. The more chromosome replication deviates from the normal situation with respect to the above characteristics, the more the cell cycle and growth of the strains are disturbed.
