Abstract

The microcins constitute a family of low-molecular-weight antibiotic substances produced by diverse strains of Enterobacteriaceae. Clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae have been screened for the production substances that can pass through cellophane membranes with a molecular weight cutoff of about 10,000 daltons and inhibit the growth of lawns of standard laboratory strains of Escherichia coli. Using this as an operational definition, almost twenty different microcins have been identified to date.
